Title
Consider an ordinance amending Chapter 30, Code of Ordinance (2010 Edition), to add fascia mounted signs. (First Reading)*
Body
When the sign ordinance was adopted in 2013, the ordinance specified several types of allowable building signs, including wall signs which are installed flush against a wall. Planning has received several requests for signs mounted to the fascia of a building, particularly where there is a limited wall area for signs. The limitation is often apparent in older commercial buildings with pitched roofs where much of the front facade has windows and doors. Staff believes this request has merit, and in many cases, these types of signs will add to the attractiveness of the tenant's space.
With this amendment, the term "fascia mounted sign" is included and defined so that type of sign is permitted. Fascia mounted signs would be considered to be a type of wall sign and would be required to meet the same size, materials, design and illumination requirements as wall signs. Concerning the placement of these signs, they may not be installed so as to extend above the peak of a pitched roof or the top of a parapet of a flat roof.
