Title
Consider a resolution authorizing the Mayor to execute an Artwork Commission Agreement with Chihuly Studio for an original piece of artwork for the Griffith Building.
Body
This contract is for the creation and installation of a custom-designed blown glass chandelier by Chihuly Studio for the future Round Rock City Arts Center located in the Griffith Building at 216 E. Main Street.
Dale Chihuly is an internationally recognized glass artist whose technically complex works are exhibited in major museums and public spaces worldwide. This would be the only permanent public Chihuly installation in Central Texas. If approved, the Chihuly team will begin fabricating the glass components in late January 2026. The contract also includes the production of a full mockup of the chandelier available for review in late spring 2026. Following formal approval, the artist team will complete final preparations, with expected installation of the finished chandelier in Round Rock in fall 2026.
This installation is intended to serve as the visual centerpiece of the new City Arts Center. The Center will be co-located with the Visitors Center and the Round Rock Chamber, the city’s primary economic development partner. The Chamber’s offices include a perfunctory space that will overlook the double-height gallery, giving this installation maximum visibility not only to visitors and residents, but to prospective partners considering Round Rock for relocation or expansion. The proposed chandelier is approximately 9 feet long and 6 feet wide, and is modeled after an ornate piece Chihuly once lost overboard at sea, featuring organic, ruby-red forms in individually blown glass elements in Chihuly’s signature style. Being located in Downtown Round Rock, the piece aligns with the city’s long-term goals of supporting foot traffic and arts/event programming, and, in line with the Round Rock Creates Arts Master Plan, elevating the professional reputation of the arts scene in Round Rock....
