Title
Consider a resolution amending the policy for naming and renaming city facilities, park lands, and public streets.
Body
On November 26, 2002 the City Council adopted a policy for the naming and renaming of city facilities, park lands and public streets. This policy contained a process for naming or renaming a public street that required the party or parties proposing to name or rename the public street to contact and subsequently receive approval from two-thirds of the property owners abutting the subject street. This created a cumbersome process for city staff seeking to implement a City initiated name change, with many property owners simply not responding to requests.
This proposed amendment modifies that process to allow for City initiated renaming of a public street. The new process would require written notice be delivered to the abutting property owners and provides for a 30 day comment period.
Adoption of this modified process will allow for expedited name changes when the request is initiated by the City. Recent examples include Bass Pro Drive and the ongoing effort to rename Oakmont Drive to Mays Street.
