Title

Consider an ordinance amending Sec. 8-208, Code of Ordinances (2010 Edition) to permit dogs in outdoor dining areas. (First Reading)*

Body

This item amends the animal code contained in Chapter 8 of the Code of Ordinances by establishing regulations permitting dogs in outdoor dining areas such as restaurant patios. Currently the relevant portion of the Code is silent on the subject, but clearly states that dogs are not permitted inside a food establishment. This particular restriction will remain, but properly restrained dogs will now be allowed to enter a restaurant patio with their owners if the restaurant operator permits it. Each establishment that seeks to accommodate dogs in outdoor dining areas must clearly post a sign informing customers. Additionally, any outdoor dining area that permits dogs will be required to have an entrance directly from the exterior of the premises to ensure dogs are not entering the interior of the establishment. Dogs are not allowed on seats, tables, counters, or similar surfaces, and establishments may not prepare food in an outdoor dining area where dogs are permitted.
