Title

Consider a resolution approving the submission of a grant application to FEMA for an Assistance to Firefighters Grant.

Body

The Fire Department has submitted a grant request through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant program for a total of $716,000.  If awarded this grant, the City of Round Rock would be responsible for $67,000 with the remaining balance being paid by FEMA.  A large portion, $514,000, of the grant request is focused on the total replacement of our12-lead heart monitors and defibrillators.  Our current heart monitors will no longer be mechanically/electronically supported by the vendor after February 2021.  The remainder of the requested funds are focused on cancer prevention.  Top priority is an annual physical that includes ultrasounds.  Currently the Fire Department participates in an annual physical program, the ultrasounds would be an added step.  The goal of the ultrasound is to detect a cancerous growth while it is treatable and in its early stages.  Two washer/extractors have been requested, one to replace a unit and one to place at ST9 which currently does not have one.  The washer/extractors are used to wash contaminants out of structural firefighting gear.  A request has also been made to place four SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus) washers in service.  These washers have just recently been approved by the NFPA and SCBA manufacturers because the washers use high pressure water and approved detergents to rid the SCBA of carcinogens after a fire.

Cost: $716,000
