Title

Consider a resolution authorizing the Mayor to execute a Contract for Engineering Services with CDM Smith Inc. for the Water Treatment Plant Pressure Relief Valves Project.

 

Body

This Engineering Contract is associated with the addition of pressure relief valves at the City of Round Rock Water Treatment Plant.  The City operates two elevated storage tanks (EST) that supply potable water to the highest pressure plane in the City.  These two ESTs are a 2.7 million gallon Barton Hill elevated storage tank (EST) that provides water to the eastern side of the City and the 1431 EST that is located on the western side of the City.  The Barton Hill EST requires recoating, per maintenance standards, which will necessitate the EST to be off-line for several months.  CDM Smith previously determined that it may be difficult to operate the water distribution system with the Barton Hill EST off-line and determined that the water distribution system cannot be supplied adequately from only the 1431 EST.

To accommodate the water distribution system when the Barton Hill EST is taken offline, CDM proposes the addition of a pressure relief valve at the City's Water Treatment Plant. The addition of a pressure relief valve will provide for more simplified operation while the Barton Hill EST is out-of-service.  The addition of the second proposed pressure relief valve will assist with moving BCRUA water into the eastern portion of the City during an emergency situation.

Round Rock Utility Staff selected the consulting firm CDM Smith, Inc. to design the project. The total engineering contract is $123,582.
